Brisbane to Birdsville

Via Adelaide

{Part 2 – Where 3 states meet and a wine or two}

After leaving Innamincka and our lovely camp at Cullyamurra Waterhole we high tailed it along the Old Strezlecki track, stopping briefly to admire the native plants and the view from the top of a sand dune. We arrived at Cameron Corner around lunchtime, and after enjoying a quick drink at the store and posing for a photo where 3 states (Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia) meet we crossed the border into NSW and started the trek south to Broken Hill.

It was certainly a great day of birdwatching for us! It started with spotting an enormous flock of emu running through Cameron Corner and continued with a wonderful photography session with a gorgeous male Wedge-tailed Eagle who didn’t want to leave his dinner of roadkill kangaroo. To begin with he tried to ignore us and just continued eating but after a few minutes he decided that we might be a threat and so started trying to warn us off. The size of these birds is actually quite intimidating. I certainly wouldn’t want to take one on! They are incredibly beautiful creatures and we were very privileged to get to see one in the wild like this!

After spending the night camped at Depot Glen we travelled on through Broken Hill and arrived at the picturesque Kinchega National Park near Menindee. The national park boasts awesome riverside campsites, shower facilities at the nearby Shearers Quarters, beautiful lakes and is overflowing with wildlife. We stopped here for a couple days and had a lovely time fishing (only catching carp unfortunately), bushwalking and touring through the historic Woolshed. A quick trip into Menindee town also revealed the connection this town has with the tale of Burke and Wills, as it was one of their camp locations and Burke stayed at the Maiden Hotel (we stopped in for a drink here as well).

After a couple days recharging our batteries at Menindee we continued south, briefly heading through Victoria before heading West to Adelaide and the lovely Barossa Valley. We took some back roads into the valley passing through fields with old stone walls and crumbling huts. It was stunning country!

Once settled into a caravan park in the Barossa we spent a few days enjoying the best the area has to offer including wine, beer and delicious food as well as touring around checking out the sites. We sure did love the Barossa, it’s a wonderful part of the world.

From here on we pointed our noses north towards Birdville, but not without some time spent in some great places along the way (all will be revealed in Part 3).
